Transcript M: Hi. I'm Michael.
S: And I am Stephanie
M: Today we are going to show you a quick and easy way to to creat a nursery mural .
S: We will start with a plain blue room and, with a few simple tools, transform it into a captivating space for your child.
M: Let's get started.
S: First let's go over the tools you'll need: We'll use light weight spackle to fill any small holes using a putty knife. paint rollers. We'll be using a general purpose 3/8 inch nap. A drop cloth A Friendly Farm Stencil Kit from My Wonderful Walls.com A variety of brushes, many of which came with the stencil kit Acrylic paints Painter's pallet or plate Chalk A tape measure A level And a scrap piece of wood and hammer for pulling out nails Some of these tools are optional, but each of them comes in handy.
M: Since this room was already painted a nice color, we are going to leave it blue. This blue color will become the sky for our farm scene. If you're painting over a dark color, you may need to primer it before painting. Be sure to save some of your base color for touch-ups later on.
M: Next, we need to repair the walls. Pull out all the nails using a hammer and a thin board to protect the wall.
M: Now, fill the holes with light-weight spackle and a putty knife. You want to use light- weight spackle because it dries quickly and you can paint right over it S: OK the walls are repaired and we've got our base color. Now the scene we will paint has hills and we want to be sure those hills rise above most of the furniture. So, with some chalk, we’ve gone ahead and marked out where the furniture will sit. -So, let’s sketch the hills. M: The easiest way to paint hills is to use a roller.
S: Now that the hills are painted, we want to place little marks on the walls to indicate where the furniture will go. This will allow us to design around the furniture. Don't forget about things like lamps, mirrors, and trashcans. (View other nursery decorating ideas)
M: For this room, we'll be using the Friendly Farm Stencil Kit from MyWonderfulWalls.com. This kit contains 30 large stencils including a 4-foot barn, farm animals, sunflowers, clouds, etc. All these stencils are self-adhesive so we won't need any tape or spray adhesive.
S: The kit includes brushes and some extra release paper. We'll hold onto this because it will come in handy later. M: Now the fun begins!
S: For practice, we are going to start with a simple cloud. -Remove the stencil from the paper backing. Don't throw the backing away. We'll need this to store the stencil.
S: Place the stencil on the wall and rub it down with your hand, making sure that all the inner edges are down.
S: I'm going to using a 4-inch foam brush, dipping it lightly in some white acrylic paint. Be sure not to get too much paint on the brush. Otherwise, it might bleed under the stencils. It's important to use a stabbing motion to paint, particularly around the edges. If you use a back and forth motion, the paint could work its way under the stencil.
S: Once the paint is semi-dry, remove the stencil. It’s that easy!
S: Now that we’ve practiced with a cloud we are going to start the scene with the barn. It’s the largest element so we’ll start with it and work our way out.
M: The barn comes in 2 pieces. I’ve used a level to mark where the top and bottom meet. This will ensure that our barn is level.
M: We are using a previously used barn stencil so you can see it easier at home. Peel off the backer paper of the top section of the barn. Hold the sheet at the top edge keeping it taught. Put the stencil close to the wall and just eyeball its alignment with the marks, and place the stencil on the wall. M: Use the same method with the bottom half. Hold the stencil at the top edge keeping it taught. This will keep the stencil flat as you lay on the wall. Line up the notches and place it on the wall. Don't hold the stencil by the sides or you'll deform the stencil as you place it on the wall, and you'll end up with frustrating bubbles. M : In order for these larger stencils to hold their form the designs need to include bridges which leave some unpainted space. So, once the stencil is removed, just come back and paint them in.
S: Now we will fill in the rest of the scene using the My Wonderful Walls kit.
M: You can layer elements to create depth in a scene such as painting this fence in front of the corn and then painting flowers in front of the fence. S: Also, use your base coat color for any need touch-ups.
S We’ll here it is! We have completely transformed this room in a single day. M: We hope this quick and easy method has inspired you to paint your own baby nursery.
S: And remember at My Wonderful walls .com we make it easy for your walls to be wonderful. Baby Nursery .
